Houston ISD AI Guidebook

Want to partner with AI for Education to create AI guidance at your school or district? LEARN HOW

One of the highlights of our year was partnering with the Houston ISD to build AI literacy within their school district. It was a privilege to get to work with an amazing group of engaged teachers and leaders, and partner on their AI Guidebook, training approach, student curriculum, and PLC model.

As educators and students adopt AI, developing policies and guidelines is crucial to realizing AI’s benefits while mitigating risks. While such a policy is always an ongoing work-in-progress, we wanted to share Houston’s AI Guidebook which serves as a framework for students, staff, and families to safely and effectively engage with AI tools while protecting student privacy and maintaining academic integrity.

Key Features:

1. Establishes Houston’s guiding principles and clear age-based access limits

2. Details approved enterprise-level AI tools and their appropriate uses, focusing on products that ensure data security.

3. Provides specific usage guidelines for all stakeholders, emphasizing:

   - Data privacy protection
   - Required parental consent
   - Proper citation of AI-assisted work
   - Content verification requirements
   - Safe and responsible use parameters

4. Implements monitoring and support systems with clear procedures for addressing misuse and supporting proper implementation.

Thank you to Superintendent Miles, Rebecca Ballentine, Raul Alanis Jr, Christine Mai, and the entire HISD team.
